Abbie was living in an IOOF Home in Springfied at the time of her death. Her parents, William R. and Marie Antoinette McCauley, were from Vermont. Her siblings: Frederick W., Henry, and Nathaniel were born in Vermont while her sister Phebe Ann was born in Michigan in 1842. The family moved from Vermont to Michigan between 1833 and 1838. She married Joseph on 10 August 1867 in Henry County, Ohio. In 1880, she and Joseph were living in Liberty Center, Henry County, Ohio.

Abby's great-grandfather, Hugh McCauley, was a captain in the Revolutionary Army, and at the close of the war moved to the South where he died. He had three children: Samuel, Alexander who was married and had one daughter, and Nathaniel, who was a soldier in the war of 1812, and died, unmarried.

Samuel, the grandfather of Abby, had three children: Hannah who married Joshua Kelly and lived in Vermont; Abigail who died at age 15, and William R. Samuel was a farmer, and after his marriage to Abigail Wilson, lived in Vermont until 1836, when he moved to Michigan. He settled near Adrian, where they both died, Samuel in 1841 and Abigail in 1844.

William R. McCauley was born in 1804 and died in June, 1876. He came to Ohio in 1849 and settled in Henry County. He was a Justice of the Peace in 1868. His wife, was born in 1808 and died in 1869. She was the mother of five children: Frederick who died at age 24, Henry Augustus who died at age 22, Nathaniel who lived in Henry County, Phoebe Ann who married Edwin Freeman, and Abigail.

Abby spent the first 10 years of her life in Michigan and then moved to Henry County where she attended the schools until she was 17. She became a teacher. She was a member of the Daughters of Rebekah, the Woman's Relief Corps the WCTU, and the School Suffrage Club. She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
