Miriam McCleskey ("Mimi") Brown, 84, of Lubbock passed away at her home Wednesday, May 21, 2008, after a brief illness. She is preceded in death by her husband, David; her parents, James Lawrence McCleskey and Sarah Waller McCleskey; her brothers, James and Waller; and sister, Julia.
She was born Nov. 20, 1923, in Culverton, Ga., and moved to Atlanta in 1925 with her family. Miriam graduated from Commercial High School of Atlanta in 1941, and then worked as a secretary for several insurance agencies. She married David Lamar Brown of Dothan, Ala. on May 10, 1946.
Mrs. Brown moved to Lubbock from Atlanta with her husband in 1960. She graduated from the Lubbock School of Vocational Nursing in 1974 and worked primarily on post-partum, West 3 OB/GYN at Methodist Hospital in Lubbock for 19 years, until her retirement in 1993. She is fondly remembered by patients and coworkers alike for her kind, uplifting nature, and her skill and compassion as a nurse. She loved her children, grandchildren, great-grandchild, the outdoors, her little black dog - Acacia, her turtles, digital photography, computer games, the internet, macram?, crocheting, and working in her yard.
She is survived by three sons, David Lamar Brown Jr. and wife Lynn Wood Brown of Mechanicsburg, Pa., James M. Brown and wife Nancy Leyva Brown of El Paso, and John W. (Bill) Brown of Lubbock. She is further survived by David and Lynn's daughters, Sara Brown Donovall and husband Leo Richard Donovall III and great-granddaughter, Abigail Grace Donovall of Mechanicsburg, Pa., and Emily Marie Brown of Bend, Ore.; James and Nancy's daughter, Amy Renae Brown of El Paso; and James' children from a previous marriage, Grace Elizabeth Brown, and Timothy Paul Brown of Lubbock.
Funeral services for Miriam will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 28, at Resthaven's Abbey Chapel, 19th St. and Frankford Ave., with the Reverend John Ballard officiating. Graveside services will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park. Friends of Mimi may visit the family at Resthaven Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 27, from 7 to 8 p.m.
