|Birth: ||Sep. 27, 1846|
|Death: ||Apr. 26, 1870|
Married Henry Wirt Butler on May 9, 1867, in Springfield, IL. Daughter of Gen. John A. McClernand. She was born in Springfield, and died April 26, 1870 of consumption, leaving one child, WILLIAM J.
With such emotion we record the death of Mrs. Helen C. McClernand Butler, beloved consort of Mr. Henry Wirt Butler, of this city; oldest daughter of Major Gen. John A. McClernand. She died on the evening of the 26th day of April, 1870, in the 24th year of her age, having been born September 27, 1846, leaving one only child, a son two years of age, a disconsolate husband, inconsolable parents, and a whole community in sorrow.
Through a painful illness, and during her greatly increased suffering of the four weeks immediately preceding her death she maintained a fortitude and firmness not often witnessed, and she retained full possession of all her mental faculties until she was released by death.
By this irreparable and mysterious providence, this excellent, accomplished and pious lady is removed from a sphere where her talents gave promise of great uselfulness. We can only unite our heart-felt sorrow with that of all who knew her. "Whom the gods love, die young."
The funeral will take place to-morrow afternoon, from the residence of her husband, South Seventh street. IL State Register, Springfield, IL 4-27-1870
