JAN ANN MCCLENDON ALEXANDER passed away after a long battle on Wednesday, August 17, 2011 while in Houston Hospice. Born in Conway, Arkansas on a Friday the 13th in March of 1920 as the only child of Roy and Willie Anderson McClendon, she lived in Arkansas and Colorado before beginning elementary school in Vernon, Texas. After graduation from Vernon High School, she attended West Texas State College.
While on a break from school visiting her parents in Waco, she met the love of her life, Nelse Alexander. They married just a few short months later in 1940 and moved to Port Arthur where Alex taught chemistry. With the advent of World War II, Alex and Jane moved to Houston when Alex went to work at Shell Research in Pasadena. Shortly after the birth of their second daughter, Jane, Alex, Carolyn and Betty Jane moved to Pasadena where Jane would live for the next fifty-five years.
Alex lost a three-year battle with cancer in 1953, leaving Jane to raise her two daughters alone. She went to work in the payroll and accounting department of the Pasadena Independent School District working her way up to Director of the department when she retired after 27 years.
After retirement Jane traveled across the United States and throughout Europe, playing bridge at every opportunity. "Mimi" was kept quite busy as well with her ever growing family of "grands" and "greats" as she lived just down the block from her two daughters and eight grandchildren. She sold her house and moved to The Terrace in 2005. She was an avid baseball fan always supporting her Astros through thick and thin. In 2009 Jane moved to Holly Hall in Houston where she lived until her death.
Jane was a life-long Methodist and a charter member of Sunset United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir in early years and served the Lord in a variety of ways all her life. She cherished her church and all the people in it.
She is survived by her two daughters, Carolyn Alexander Shelby and Betty Alexander Warren, eight grandchildren, Teresa Sheffield and husband David, John Shelby and wife Suzanne, Lori Galba and husband Chuck, Micah Essery and husband Shaun, Alec Warren and wife Robynne, Ashlie Peters and husband Tim, Joanna Liska and husband Randy, and Julie Shelby, as well as 16 great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6:00pm until 8:00pm Friday, August 19, at Niday-Fairmont Funeral Home in Pasadena, and the funeral service will be held at 1:00pm Saturday, August 20, at Sunset United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at Grand View Memorial Park.
