| Birth: | Mar. 8, 1936 Tallahassee Leon County Florida, USA | | Death: | Dec. 9, 2008 |  Bessie McClendon Amos began her life in Tallahassee, Florida, on March 8th, to the now-late Leroy McClendon and Peggy Hall McClendon Davis. She was a member of the Lincoln High School Class of 1955. She studied at Florida A&M University and later received her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Florida Memorial College and the Master of Education from University of Northern Colorado. Bessie began her spiritual life at an early age. She was baptized and became an active member of Tallahassee's historic Mount Zion Primitive Baptist Church at Dawkins Pond. On August 16, 1959, she married Willie Amos and began married life in Miami, Florida. To this union, two daughters were born, Sharna LaVern and Sonia Renee. Bessie began her teaching career in the Miami-Dade County School System. Bessie served the students of Miami, as a Social Studies teacher, for over 30 years with the majority spent at C.OP.E. Center North. An active member in her community, Bessie became a member of the Eta Nu Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated in 1977. She served her sorority in many capacities, from committee chairperson on several committees to Basileus. She was also a member of the Miami Chapter of Top Ladies of Distinction, as well as the Business & Professional Women's Circle of the Historic Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church. By His grace, on December 9, 2008, Bessie found peace with our Lord and Savior. She leaves many family members and friends to mourn and cherish loving memories, which include her devoted husband of 49½ years, Willie Amos, and two daughters, Sharna L. Amos and Sonia R. Amos, both of Tallahassee. Other survivors include her sister, Catherine M. Sims, of Gainesville, Florida; two stepsisters, Sophia A. Davis of Tallahassee, Florida, and Nadlean D. (Robert) Moore, of Mt. Dora, Floridal a stepbrother, Lynwood Davis of Mt. Dora, Florida; her mother-in-law, Mary F. Amos of Weston, Georgia; three brothers-in-laws, Henry Frank (Katie) Amos of Miami, Florida, Walter Clyde Amos, Sr. of Weston, Georgia, and Malik (Karen) Saleem of Atlanta, Georgia; six sister-in-laws, Lola M. Frances of Miami, Florida, Johnnie Adderley of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Mabel Amos of Newark, New Jersey, Thelma Davis of Atlanta, Georgia, Georgie Humphery of Columbus, Georgia, Alvonia Bennett of Albany, Georgia; three aunts, Jennie H. (Shedrick) Davis of Miami, Florida, Ann H. Robinson of St. Petersburg, Florida, and Carrie H. (Cecil) Moses of Miami, Florida; one uncle, Larry (Queen) Hall of Miami, Florida; her precious godchildren, Alteasha, A. Ashley and Alphonso Ervin, IV; and a host of nieces, nephews and other family members.
