Rufus McClelland was born January 21, 1899 in Ivanhoe, Bulloch County, Georgia. One of ten children, he was the son of William Madison McClelland and Manie Veranda Glisson McClelland. His wife was Margaret Carr McClelland, and they had a son, James Keiffer McClelland, and an infant daughter. He was a World War I veteran and a member of Old Fellowship Baptist Church in Bulloch County. Rufus died after a long illness shortly before his 87th birthday on January 16, 1986 in the Veterans' Hospital in Dublin, Laurens County, Georgia and is buried in Old Fellowship Baptist Church Cemetery. His funeral was at the Terry C. Massey Funeral Home. His ancestry was Scots, Scots-Irish, English, German, and--through the Martin and Strickland surnames--Native American (Lumbee).
