The Chico Enterprise, Thursday Evening, June 29, 1939:
"Mrs. Mary Bruce Taken by Death. Death following a lengthy illness at 2 o'clock this afternoon in a local hospital summoned Mrs. Mary Belle Bruce, 726 Normal Street, a pioneer resident of Chico. Mrs. Bruce was 72 years old and a native of Iowa. She had resided in Chico for 52 years and was widely known and highly respected. Mrs. Bruce was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and of the Baptist Church. Surviving are three sons, Leroy Bruce of Los Angeles, Harry Bruce of Marysville, and Joe D. Bruce of Chico; three daughters: Mrs. Ruth Sharf of Sacramento; Mrs. Margaret Smathers of Sacramento; and Mrs. Stella Clark of Palo Alto; two brothers, Charles McClard of Chico and Will McClard of Grass Valley; one sister, Mrs. Nellie Woodward of Chico and eight grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are being made by the H.C. Bicknell Funeral Home."
