J. C. McCarty, of Burlington township, was born in Union county, Indiana, September 16, 1824. His grandfather, Benjamin McCarty, was of Scotch-Irish descent. His father, James McCarty, was born in Tennessee in 1790,(see note), was a soldier of the war of 1812, and died in Union county, Indiana in 1834. His wife bore the maiden name of Margaret Hamilton, and their children were Benjamin W., Samuel, James Monroe, Nathaniel H, John Wesley, Enoch Jackson and Lafayette Calhoun, all now deceased. Our subject is the only survivor of the family. He was reared on a farm in his native county and when twenty-nine years of age came to Carroll county, where he purchased his present farm of eighty acres. Here he has since remained, devoting his energies to the cultivation and improvement of his land, and is regarded as one of the most thrifty, enterprising, and progressive agriculturists of the county. Mr. McCarty was married December 29, 1854 (see note), to Delilah, daughter of John Johnson, who came to Indiana from Monroe county, Virginia. Their children are Mary M., wife of Rev. N. M. Douglass, of Cuba, Illinois; Acantha C., wife of Isaac C. Piegle (sic: should be Riegle); William L., of Clinton county, Indiana, James B., deceased, and Sarah Jane. The mother of this family died March 14, 1868. In March, 1871 (see note), Mr. McCarty married Agnes Y. Shanklin, sister of George W. Shanklin, of Cutler, Indiana. Note: Marriage to Delilah Johnson is 1853, per Indiana Marriage Collection; marriage to Agnes Y. Shanklin in 1871, per Indiana Marriage Collection.

Grandfather Benjamin McCarty

Note: Ref to his father James born in Tennessee, Tenn became a state 1 June 1796, James being born in 1790 .. some ref's have James born in Virginia in an area which later became TN, seems correct.
