Alexander J. McCartney SAN DIEGO Alexander J. McCartney, "Our Hero", formerly of Halifax, Mass., 69 years old, passed away Sunday, June 14, 2009, peacefully at home, following a courageous battle against cancer, surrounded by the love of his family. Born in Quincy, Mass., he was the first of four children of the late Alexander and Julia Veronica McCartney (Riordan). After high school, Alex served his country in the U.S. Navy. Following his tour, he married the love of his life, Ruth A. McCartney (Stewart). They happily raised their girls in Halifax for 19 years while Alex was employed at General Dynamics Shipyard in Quincy. He loved working there up until the day they closed their gates. Ship building was Alex's passion, therefore he followed his profession to San Diego where he was employed as ship's manager for NASSCO until he retired in 2002. Alex leaves his loving wife Ruth McCartney; his daughters, Julia Simmons of Hanson and Florence McCartney of Maine; his son-in-law, Frank E. Simmons Jr.; his grandsons, Jarred, Cade and Spencer McCartney; and his granddaughter, Madison Simmons; his two sisters, Sally Richard and Judith Robinson, along with a host of nieces and nephews which he forever will hold close to his heart. There will be a celebration of life for all who wish to attend once Alex and Ruth return home to Massachusetts where they belong. Alex's family request that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Lance Armstrong Cancer Foundation.
