MADISON - M. Kathleen (Kay) Becker, age 86, of Madison, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 20, 2006, at the Don and Marilyn Anderson HospiceCare Center surrounded by her family. Kay was born on Sept. 1, 1919, in Benton, the daughter of Ambrose and Sarah (Murray) McCarthy. She graduated from Benton High School in 1937 and attended Madison College. Kay later married Byron Becker on Sept. 30, 1943, in the chapel at Camp Grant, Ill. They have celebrated 62 years of marriage together. Kay was a founding member of the St. Peter Catholic Church in Madison.
Kay enjoyed playing scrabble, bowling, crossword puzzles, and her card playing club. She also enjoyed reading "Lives of the Saints." She especially enjoyed spending time with her family and the grandchildren. As everyone knew, Kay was proud of her Irish heritage. Every year she celebrated St. Patrick's Day. She was known to have an infectious personality, where her sense of humor, independent thinking, and uncompromising faith was well known by all. Kay's challenging childhood contributed to her strength of character in being the good mother that lives on in her children today.
