Mary Etta McCarty Burns, age 90, of Marysville, died Saturday, August 20, 2016 at Brookdale Senior Living. A homemaker, she retired from human resources at the Ohio Reformatory for Women where she was an associate for 17 years. She also was a former associate of Eljer Plumbingware. She was a longtime member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church where she was baptized and confirmed her faith on February 27, 1949. She was a member and past president of the Ladies Aid Society and was in charge of the Ladies Aid Christmas bazaar committee for several years. She was known for her generous donations of food and time for her church family. She was a member of Memorial Hospital auxiliary and Twig 6. A past member of Union County Homemakers, she hosted many gatherings for the group. A proficient baker and cook, she made splendid wedding cakes for family and friends. She will be remembered for her creative homemaking skills and abilities and accommodating many, many family functions, reunions and Christmas gatherings. She will especially be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt. She was born July 8, 1926 in Irwin, Ohio to the late Ray S. and Nellie Marie Walke McCarty. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William W. Burns, Sr.; a step son, Glenn Stillings; a step-son and step-daughter-in-law, Donald and Joyce Burns; a daughter-in-law, Marilyn Burns; a brother and sister-in-law, Carl and Phyllis McCarty; two sisters, Arleta Bowersmith and Betty Dodge; a brother-in-law, Richard Rausch; and a sister-in-law, Maryellen McCarty. She is survived by two sons, William W. Burns, Jr. and Dennis (Sandy) Burns and a step-daughter, Betty Stillings, all of Marysville; three grandchildren, Lyndsay (Chad) Beverly, William “Will” (Ashley) Burns and Lisa Burns; three great-grandsons, Landon and MJay Beverly and William “Liam” Burns; her sister, Doris Rausch and two brothers, Glen McCarty and Ray (Dorothy) McCarty, Jr. and a brother-in-law, Edgar Bowersmith, all of Marysville; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, August 26, 2016 at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church where the family will receive friends beginning at 4 p.m. Rev. Jacob D. Heino will officiate and interment will be held at a later date at the church cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church or Central Ohio Alzheimer Association.
