William E. and Temperance McCann Clark were farmers and they farmed land they acquired in Trinity County. The first property purchased by them was located in the Samuel Adams survey and is still owned by some of their descendants. They also owned one hundred sixty-eight acres in the Polly Ryan survey and one hundred acres in the M. Vaughan and T. D. Stanford surveys. In the Trinity County register of marks and brands, a mark can be found recorded in the names of W. E. Clark and a different mark recorded for Tempe Clark. This was a method of marking the ears of animals to identify their ownership since livestock was allowed on open-range until just a few years ago in Trinity County.
