Mary Clare Babcock passed away on Monday, January 12, 2009 in Tucson, Arizona following complications from surgery. She leaves her husband of 48 years, Dr. Philip A. Babcock, her daughter, Maureen A. Babcock, both of Oro Valley, AZ; son and daughter-in-law, Timothy M. Babcock and Nicola P. Haylor-Babcock, and beloved grandson, Duncan M. Babcock, all of San Jose, CA, and her sister, Evelyn Ivanisin of Holden, MA, nieces and nephews.
The eldest child of James H. McAuliffe and Rachel (DiPasquale) McAuliffe, she was born in Worcester, Massachusetts on 14 April 1931. A graduate of Commerce High School there, she became a Licensed Practical Nurse at Worcester Memorial Hospital. She graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1983 from Somerset County College in Flemington, N.J. During a career spanning 34 years Mary held management positions in nursing homes first in Massachusetts and later at the Devereux Foundation in New Jersey. She also worked for many years both as a private duty nurse and as a nurse in the Hunterdon Medical Center in New Jersey .
Mary was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps Reserve, where she served at Camp Lejeune, N.C. prior to her marriage.
Mary and Philip were married on March 23, 1958 in Bolton, Massachusetts. Long time residents of Basking Ridge, New Jersey , they later moved to Annandale, New Jersey before relocating to Oro Valley, Arizona in 1997.
Mary loved all animals. In addition to supporting local humane societies and no-kill shelters, she encouraged a love of animals in the family. She also found joy in sharing with charities that supported children, and the needy, both people and animals.
