"John McArthur, a retired and well-known builder, died at his residence on Broad street below Pine, on Friday, at the age of eighty-three years. He was an uncle of John McArthur, Jr., the architect of public buildings. He was a native of Scotland and came to this country when a young man beginning life as a carpenter at the Naval Asylum. In time he became one of the most prominent builders in this city. He built the Atheneaum at Sixth and Adelphia streets, The Girard House, The La Pierre Hotel, now the Hotel Lafayette, the Presbyterian Church at Seventeenth and Spruce streets and the white marble building at Thirteenth and Arch streets, now known as St. George's Hotel. He was for many years retired from business.
