Jean Ellen McArthur Arnold of Corpus Christi passed away on Friday, February 2, 2007 at the age of 88 from complications arising from a struggle with Alzheimer's.
Jean was born on December 26, 1918 in Chickasha, Oklahoma to Susan McCoy MrArthur and Claire L. McArthur. Jean graduated from Ada High School in 1936 with honors. She graduated from East Central State Teachers College in Ada, Oklahoma with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English Literature and Education in 1940. Jean continued her education and obtained a Masters Degree in Library Science.
She met and married the love of her life and husband of 38 years, Edward Preston (Dick) Arnold, on November 23, 1940 in Alice, Texas. She and her husband Dick, moved to Corpus Christi in 1946.
Jean was a devoted wife, wonderful Mother, Grandmother affectionately known as "Granjean". She was also known as a gracious hostess, and treasured friend. She was loved and admired for her sharp mind, quick wit, warmth, grace and beautiful white hair that she processed since she was 21. She was remarkably clever, and mentor to many. Her personal joys were reading and traveling especially with family and friends. During her life, she was a Charter member of the 21 Club, Belletristic Book Club, Corpus Christi Town Club, Corpus Christi County Club and volunteer librarian of First Christian Church of 50 years. Her husband, Dick, donated the library in her honor as a gift to the First Christian Church where they were members.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Edward Preston (Dick) Arnold, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.L. McArthur, brothers, Claire L. McArthur, Jr. and Harvey King McArthur.
She is survived by her son, John Thomas Arnold and wife Bobi Jean of Roanoke, Virginia; daughter Carol Arnold Thaxton and husband James of Corpus Christi, Texas; five grandchildren: John Preston Arnold, Sydney Morgan Arnold of Roanoke, Virginia Margaret (Margo) Ellen Thaxton, Morgan Erin Thaxton, and Gaines Edward Thaxton of Corpus Christi, Texas and Mrs. Harvey King McArthur of Austin, Texas, numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.
In addition, Jean is survived by her beloved caregiver, companion and dearest friend Consuela (Connie) Spence who she often referred to as "Mother". Connie's love and dedication has been the family's greatest gift over the last 24 years.
Following a private burial service, a Memorial Service Celebrating Jean's life was held Tuesday, February 6, 2007 at the First Christian Church, Corpus Christi, Texas.
Those who knew Jean will understand the family's request that bright, colorful clothing be worn to the service...No Black!
