CELEBRATING HIS LIFE AND LEGACY
THE CHRONICLES OF A GOOD MAN
The day was October 19, 1942 when Robert Edward Mayo and Viola Mack Mayo Brunson were blessed by God with the birth of a son, Robert Mayo Brunson. Young Robert, affectionately called "Bobby" by his friends, preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Harold Brunson.
Bobby received his formal education in the Richmond Public School System, graduating in l961 from Armstrong High School. In l963, Robert married the former Dorene Lindsay, three children were born to this union, a daughter, Talitha;and two sons, Robert Jr. and Terrance. After the resolving of this marriage, Robert was blessed with two more sons, Michael and Anthony. On April 10, 1982, the day before Easter, Robert married the former Yvonne Mayo and was blessed with another daughter, Caren.
At an early age, Robert had a 'Spiritual Experience" when he committed his life to Christ and was converted and baptized. He grew up in the Glorious Church of God in Christ where he later served as a Trustee. He later moved his membership to Fourth Baptist Church on "P" Street in Richmond, Virginia.
Robert, a natural born servant, found great joy in helping others. This was evident by the occupations he held throughout his life. From the very beginning of his working career, he served the people of his beloved community. Bobby worked for Railway Express and the Greater Richmond Transit Company(GRTC) as a driver. All of Robert's life he had a desire of becoming a Mortician and in 1968, while working for the O.F. Howard Funeral Home, he enrolled as a part-time student in the Mortuary Science program at John Tyler community College. He later obtained full time employment with the O.P. Chiles Funeral Home under a two year apprenticeship. In l976, he became licensed by the State of Virginia as a Funeral Service Licensee. He founded several businesses, including the Ebony Construction Company and Brunson's Embalming Service.
In l982, Mr. Brunson founded and operated the Crawley and Brunson Funeral Home until the demise of that partnership in l985. In l986, he became Manager of the Scott-Lightfoot Funeral Home where he remained for fifteen years. Throughout his career, Mr. Brunson trained a number of apprentice in the art of embalming. In May of 2002, he founded Brunson's Funeral Chapel out of a desire to continue to serve his community with the belief that everybody deserved a decent burial at an affordable cost. A friend described Bobby as "one of the last good hearted men who would go out of his way to help anyone in need."
Some of the professional organizations which he belonged include the Virginia Morticians Association and the Richmond Funeral Directors Association, where he served as Vice President and was honored as Mortician of the Year in 2007. Bobby also belonged to the H.L. Harris Masonic Lodge.
Servant of God well done, now rest from thy love employ; the battle fought, the victory won, now enter thy Master's joy.
