SURGOINSVILLE – Sallie Ruth Bowery, 91, passed away gently early Tuesday morning, July 19, 2011. Sallie Ruth was born and raised in Hawkins County to Sallie and Russell Mayo. Growing up during the Depression taught her how to make scarce resources into something beautiful. When her sweetheart Blaine Bowery went off to war, she joined the ranks of the workforce and became an operator for the United Intermountain Telephone Company. Upon Blaine's return, they were happily married and stayed that way until his death 57 years later. During that time Sallie Ruth worked full-time for over 40 years, raised 3 children, enjoyed 4 grandchildren and actively farmed. There wasn't a thing she couldn't grow, bake or quilt.
In addition to her parents and Blaine, she is preceded in death by her brothers, John, Tony and Bud Mayo; sister Nellie Lee and half-sister Ethel Way.
Sallie Ruth is survived by her daughter Carolyn Caldwell and husband Bob, of Baltimore, MD; sons Mickey Bowery, Rickey Bowery and wife Annalisa, all of Rogersville; grandchildren Megan Caldwell, of Alexandria, VA, Lucas and McKenna Bowery, and Samantha Larkins, all of Rogersville. Sallie Ruth had many special and loving people in her life, including nieces Margaret Evans and Wanda Willingham, and caregivers Tabitha Mays, Nancy Bowery, Justine Larkin, and Deb Carmichael. "Ruthie" was strong and resilient and she was the sweetest person you'd ever meet. She loved her family more than herself, and her absence is a loss that will never be replaced.
