She was born on Feb. 27, 1920, in Rileyville and was a daughter of the late Raymond Wood and Viola Beylor Wood.
Mrs. Mayes worked for Luray Caverns Corporation for 30 years and was a member of the Stanley United Methodist Church.
On April 20, 1941, she married Harry Maywood Mayes, who died on May 16, 1973.
She is survived by two sons, Rodger D. and Harry M. Mayes Jr., both of Stanley; a brother, William Newton Wood of Front Royal; two sisters, Cora Anne Updike of Front Royal; and Marguerite Sedwick of Luray; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Katheryn Irene Triplett; and a brother, Douglas Wood.
A funeral service was to be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 26, at the Bradley Funeral Home by Richard Grendahl, with burial in Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Luray.
