Kathleen (Katherine) Virginia May Critzer of 656 Florence Avenue, Waynesboro, Virginia went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 6, 2008. She had been hospitalized several times during the year and passed away at Augusta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Fishersville, Virginia.
Katherine was born June 16, 1913, in Augusta County, daughter of the late Cora Agnes Hanger May and Charles Edward May. She was preceded in death by brothers, Charles Edward May., Jr., Aubrey May, Clyde May; sister Lottie Gutherie; half brothers, Sumpter and Howard Harner; half sisters, Willie Hiserman, Bertha Hutchens, and daughter, Nancy May Critzer Jordan on March 27, 2001
She is survived by her loving husband, David Henry Critzer, whom she married November 23, 1940; daughter, Shirley Harris of Silver Spring, Maryland; granddaughters, Jenee Jordan Libby and her husband Bruce of Ruckersville, Virginia; Tonya Jordan Pharr and her husband, Randall of Richmond, Virginia; Heidi Harris of North Bethesda, Maryland; two great grandchildren, Aaron and Miles Pharr; sister-in-law Anna Lee May of Sunnyside Retirement Community, Harrisonburg; and a number of special nieces and nephews.
As a young woman, Katherine taught herself how to play the piano and later played for Smyrna Church in Dooms-not too far from her birthplace. She spent all her life in Waynesboro and never ventured too far from home. In 1939 she joined the First Presbyterian Church and was a faithful member for 69 years. Katherine enjoyed baking throughout the year-especially at Christmas. Everyone loved her German chocolate cake, chocolate pound, and Italian cream cakes. In 2003, three of her recipes were published in a cookbook sponsored by a private high school fundraiser in Maryland. Katherine loved geraniums and kept them healthy in the basement window throughout the winter. All the flowers seemed to thrive with her care. Katherine was a dedicated homemaker, a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, and friend to many people. She always put the family first. She will be remembered for her calm and gentle manner.
The family would like to thank the doctors and staff at Augusta Medical Center, Avante, Waynesboro Manor and most recently the Augusta Nursing and Rehabilitation center for the care given to Katherine during the last year. They would also like to thank Pastors Glen Holman, Albert Connette, and Lyn McLintock for their many visits and prayers, as well as Ruth Coyner, patient advocate/case worker/friend, and Dr. Wesley Ross, her physician for many years.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1PM Friday, May 9, 2008 at Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Funeral Homes with Pastor Glen Holman officiating. Private interment will follow at Riverview Cemetery.
Active pallbearers are: Hampton May, Larry May, Tom Guthrie, Conrad Guthrie, Ralph Hevener, H. W. Harner, Jr., Kenneth Critzer and Timmy Critzer.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Thursday, May 8, 2008 at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes.
