Vay May Britton, 88, who resided most of her life in the Waterview area of Portsmouth, died Feb. 17, 2008. Born in Gassaway, W.Va., May 2, 1919, to James A. and Florence Horner May, she was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wayland P. Britton; a son, G. Bill Backus; and three brothers, Val, Vance and Joe May. Mrs. Britton was a homemaker and assisted her late husband as a legal secretary in his law practice. She enjoyed her ample time at "Blue Spray" in Nags Head swimming and fishing in the mountains and writing poetry, painting and reading. Survivors include her son, James W. Backus and wife Mary Lee; daughter-in-law, Betty J. Backus; sister, Vida Lee Sands; five grandchildren, Sandy Tilghman, Gary C. Backus, Lynn Kleisler, J. Quinton Backus and J. Clayton Backus; seven great-grandchildren, Lily Claire Backus, Charles, Gary and Allen Tilghman, Leah and Bradley Backus and Heather Kleisler; and numerous nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Bennetts Creek Chapel, Suffolk.
