Margaret Mayfield Lewis, 91, entered into eternal rest, Thursday, April 8, 2004.

Margaret, the eldest of Norman and Donnia Mattox Mayfield's thirteen children, was born October 1, 1912, in Ruston, LA. As the big sister, she often served as caregiver, tutor, and disciplinarian. This devotion to family developed in her a strong work ethic, a love for learning, an appreciation for home grown food, and expertise in down home cooking.

Margaret eloped with Louvergus (L.V.) Lewis in 1932. They made their home in Ruston. To this union was born four children (Evangeline (Van), Benjamin, Laska (L.L.), and Maurine). The family was very talented, creative, and participated in many school and church activities.

Margaret and Louvergus were firm believers in education. After their children completed college, Margaret went back and completed her high school diploma requirement. Afterwards, she attended Delta Vocational School in Monroe and became a nurse. She worked for the Lincoln Parish Health Unit for many years. After her retirement, she became a private nurse, working from the Nurse Registry.

Prior to her illness and reluctant move to Inglewood, CA, to live with Van, Margaret Mayfield Lewis led a full life. She was an active member of Mount Harmony Missionary Baptist Church and New Hope Baptist Church. She taught Sunday School, served as treasurer on the Deaconess Board, was President of the Mission, and was a dedicated member of the Faithful Forever #47 Order of Eastern Star. Family remained an integral factor in her life. Her home was opened to grandchildren, relatives, and friends who lived with "Big Mama" while they attended college. Many others stopped by to participate in fish fries, chow downs, domino slams, or 'chew da fat' visits.

Her husband, Louvergus, and two of her children, Maurine and Benjamin, preceded her in death.

She leaves to cherish her precious memory her children Dr. Evangeline Lewis of Inglewood, and Laska Lewis of Ruston; four sisters, Audie Mae Fisher of Los Angeles, CA, Sally Brooks Mayfield of Ruston, Eunice Burton of Carson, CA, and Betty Shephard of Houston, TX; nine grandchildren, Janice, Donna, Connie, Marguerite, Byron, Maurine, Gennell, Beverly, and Roshelle; ten great-grandchildren, Courtney, Camille, Rodrick, Tejae, Riley, Ryanne, Robert, Stephen, Maya, and Shante; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.

Services will be held Thursday, April 15, 2004 at 9:00 AM at Inglewood Cemetery Mortuary, Manchester Chapel, 3801 W. Manchester Blvd., Inglewood, CA 90305, 310-412-6811. Expressions may be sent to Dr. Evangeline M. Lewis, 3520 West 82nd Street, Inglewood, CA 90305 or Mr. Laska L. Lewis, 1403 Clara Carr Street, Ruston, LA 71270.
