Aizeya Mattocks, 8 years old, was pronounced dead on Wednesday evening, February 15, 2012 at Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA.
Aizeya was a beautiful little girl with a smile as bright as the sun. She had big, beautiful blue eyes and was a joy to be around. The room would light up when she entered. Aizeya was a very happy and positive young lady who touched the lives of everyone she ever met. She liked telling jokes and making everyone laugh. She also enjoyed giving out crazy nicknames to everyone. She loved her baton lessons and marching in parades with her baton group, Synergy Baton. Her baton friends were very special to her. Aizeya was an active young lady who also loved to bowl, ride her bike and swim.
Aizeya had been hospitalized since Monday, February 13, 2012 after she choked while eating a hot dog during her lunch in the school cafeteria.
Aizeya was a third grade student at Mercer Area Elementary School in Mercer County, PA.
While at the hospital, Aizeya needed help breathing and may have suffered brain and heart damage. She developed pneumonia and could not fight it anymore, her grandfather Mattocks stated. The official cause of death is listed as asphyxiation caused by choking on food.
Aizeya is survived by her mother, Amber Mattocks of Mercer. She is also survived by grandparents Steve and Barb Mattocks and Fred and Sue Husband all of Mercer; her maternal great-grandmother, Patty Foster
of Stoneboro; two aunts: Jamie Mattocks and Cayela Mattocks of Mercer. Her other aunts were Megan McConnell, Allison McCandless, Allison Michaels and Justine Ferguson; a cousin who was more like a little brother, Daemyin Mattocks; and many great-aunts, great-uncles and second cousins with whom she enjoyed spending time. She is greatly missed by family and her many friends and will always be remembered as "our little princess".
The funeral arrangements for Aizeya are being entrusted to the Cunningham Funeral Home in Mercer. Visitation will be on Sunday, February 19, 2012, from 2 to 4 PM and 7 to 9 PM. The funeral will be held on Monday, February 20th at 11 AM at the Mercer United Methodist Church. Pastor Richard Freeman, chaplain of Children's Hospital, Pittsburgh, and the Rev. Eric C. Leonard, pastor of the Mercer United Methodist Church will be co-officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks memorial contributions be made to Aizeya Mattocks Memorial Fund at any PNC Bank.
