Helen Ruth Barnes, 90, died Saturday, May 14th, 2011 at Autumn Meadows Nursing Home; Linn, MO. Prior to her move to Linn in January of 2010, Helen lived in Independence for 32 years. Helen was the youngest of four sisters born to Vernon A. and Mattie G. (Wilson) Matthews. She was born on the family farm between Malvern and Tabor, IA on November 8, 1920. After receiving her nursing degree from the St. Joseph School of Nursing in Kansas City, MO, she married Jake William Barnes. He preceded her in death in 1995. Helen was an active volunteer at church, Boy Scouts, Camp Fire Girls, Independence Neighborhood Council, the Independence Chapter of DAR and for many years, at the Independence Regional Hospital where she was honored as volunteer of the year in 1989. Her hobbies included sewing, needlecrafts, knitting and camping. In the years prior to Jake's passing, the couple enjoyed making wood craft items for sale at craft shows throughout the area. Helen is survived by two sons: George A. (Betty) Barnes of Kansas City, MO; John M. (Cheryl) Barnes of Independence, MO; and one daughter: Merilee (James) Thoenen of Linn, MO; six grandchildren (and 5 spouses); eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Anna Margaret Boenish of Dyersville, IA; one sister-in-law, Lois Barnes of Independence, MO; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Contributions may be made payable to the Jake Barnes Memorial Scholarship Fund (Merilee Thoenen, 108 Sunset Drive, Linn, MO 65051). Friends may call from 1-2 PM Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at Floral Hills Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 2 PM at the chapel. Interment in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.
