Mason J. Matthews

FLORENCE -- Mason James Matthews, 85, 1561 Houston St., died Thursday, Dec. 19, 1991, at his residence after a sudden illness.

He was a native of Flint, having lived in the Florence area since 1942, and was a member of Highland Baptist Church. He served in the Pacific Theatre with the U.S. Army during World War II, was a member of American Legion Post 11, a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans, and a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, having served as post commander 1958-59 and 1971-74, also serving as all-state commander during those years. He was retired from the Tennessee Valley Authority research and Development department.

The graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Roselawn Cemetery, Decatur, with Dr. Sammy Gilbreath officiating. Elkins Funeral Home, Florence, is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Chattie Mae Graham Matthews, Florence; brother, J.E. Matthews, Vacaville, Calif.; sisters, Mrs. Azalee Ellis, Mrs. Nancy Jackson, both of Somerville.

Bearers will be Bob Graham, Bill Graham, Douglas Matthews, Cecil G. Berry, John Edward Berry and Kenneth Sams.
