Dorothy Bertucci died peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, February 23, 2012 in her home in Petaluma at the age of 93. She is survived by her four children: John and his wife, Muriel, of Petaluma; Paul and his partner, Diane Rames, of Oakland, and his former wife, Silvia Rodriquez; Tom and his wife, Rosalie, of Seattle; and Ann and her partner, Georgette Effisimo, of Petaluma; and by three grandchildren, Sara, Oriana and Lily. Born at her home on Walnut Street in Petaluma in 1918, Dorothy was the daughter of Valenti C. and Ida L. Mattei and the sister of the late Fred Mattei and the late Virginia Bianchini. She was one of 12 graduates of St. Vincent de Paul High School in 1936 and later attended the University of California, Berkeley, where she earned her degree in history and library studies in 1941, going on to work at the UCLA and Cal libraries as a reference librarian. She met and married Andy Bertucci, of Modesto, CA, in 1950 and Andy became a partner in her family's clothing store, Mattei Brothers. A booklover from a very young age, Dorothy was a devoted supporter of libraries and joined the Petaluma Library Board of Trustees in 1957. She was a member of the Sonoma County Library Commission for 32 years, and a past president of the California Association of Library Trustees and Commissioners. She worked tirelessly through four bond elections to build the new Petaluma Library that opened in 1976, and was honored as Petaluma Citizen of the Year in 1974 by the Petaluma Coordinating Council. Following Andy's retirement in 1979, they enjoyed playing golf, annual gambling trips to Tahoe and numerous trips to visit relatives in Europe. Among her other passions were movies, crossword puzzles and bridge, which she continued to play with many good friends and neighbors as recently as a week before her passing. Dorothy was a bright and beautiful person, with never an unkind word for anyone. Family and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass, Monday, February 27, 2012 at 4:30 p.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 35 Liberty Street, Petaluma. Private interment at Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Petaluma. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sonoma County Library, Petaluma Branch, 100 Fairgrounds Dr, CA 94952. Family assisted by PARENT-SORENSEN MORTUARY & CREMATORY, 763-4131.
