Former Staten Islander Carmela R. Hendrock, 85, of 89 Mountainview Road, Warren, NJ, a retired Procter & Gamble worker who enjoyed gardening, died yesterday at Somerset Medical Center in Somerville, NJ.
Born Carmela Mattei in New Brighton, she attended McKee High School and lived in New Brighton for most of her life. She moved to Warren in 1967.
Mrs. Hendrock was the first female forklift operator at Procter & Gamble, Mariners Harbor, where she worked for forty-one years. After retiring in 1991, she volunteered for the Salvation Army on Staten Island, where she was involved in fundraising activities. Following her volunteer work, Mrs. Hendrock's love for children led her to start her own babysitting and nanny service, which she operated for seven years.
A member of Warren Senior Citizens, she provided transportation for other elderly members of the group. Mrs. Hendrock was also a member of the Somerset Hills Senior Day Group. She enjoyed gardening and maintaining the landscape of her two acre property. However, what she loved most was spending time with her loved ones at family gatherings.
Her husband of forty years, Louis, died in 2000.
Surviving are two sons, George McLendon and Edward McLendon; two daughters, Mary McLendon and Francine Hendrock; a brother, Anthony; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. in the Valley Memorial Funeral Home, Gillette, NJ.
Burial will follow in St. Vincent De Paul Cemetery, Millington, NJ.
