Mrs. Mathis Dies
Long Illness Fatal in Early Day Parsons Woman
"Parsons and Labette county suffered the loss of another pioneer resident in the death of Mrs. Nellie Gray Mathis which occurred at her home, 2015 Corning, at 2:30 o'clock Monday afternoon. She had been in feeble health for several years and had been confined to her bed for more than a year.
The funeral will be held at the Martin funeral chapel Wednesday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by the Rev. E. C. Smith, pastor of the United Brethren church, and interment will be in Oakwood cemetery.
She is survived by her husband, W. A. Mathis; one daughter, Mrs. J.L. Hatcher, Joplin; two sons, Harry Mathis, 1013 S. 24th, and Lloyd Mathis, proprietor of the Mathis hatchery, and by four grandchildren and other relatives. Her two brothers, Charles R. Davis and Harry E. Davis, and her sister, Mrs. Sackie Harvey, all have died within the past few years.
Mrs. Mathis was born near Labette 63 years ago, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sampson Davis, who settled in Labette county in 1867. She has spent her entire life in and around Parsons. She had been a member of the United Brethren church for 35 years.
In recent years and until sickness quieted her busy fingers, she assisted her husband in conducting their suburban grocery store at 2015 Corning. Mrs. Mathis was kindness itself that flowed in great streams from a bountiful heart, a loving and devoted wife and mother, and never in the 62 years of her life in Parsons and vicinity, has anyone heard an unkind or unfriendly word spoken about her. Friends may call at Martin Funeral chapel."
