He was born March 27, 1933 in Gaithersburg a son of the late Lewis and Elsie Fitzwater Mathias.
He is survived by his beloved wife Faye (Kessell) Mathias, They were married August 21, 1959 at Grace United Methodist Church, Gaithersburg, two children Jerry Lee (Christine) Mathias, and Jacqueline (Steve) Gosche, three grandchildren Nathalie, Trevor (Josee') and Blair, one great grandson Jacob Lee Mathias, one brother Stanley Mathias, one sister Jane (Tom) King and many nieces and nephews.
