Carol was born November 29, 1919 in Sequim, WA and was raised as the only child of Ouida Gage Christian and Arthur Mathews, a spoiled only grandchild until she was 17 years old of Innkeepers of the Olympic Inn, John W. and Hannah Christian of Brinnon, WA.
Many times her family traveled up and down the coast where Carol attended many different schools including the Notre Dame Academy in San Jose but she always prided herself in her schooling and penmanship with her favorite teacher being Mrs. Alma Sundstrom in Belfair, WA.
Carol died peacefully with her family by her side on December 10, 2007 in Mt. Vernon after fighting a courageous battle against dementia.
In 1937, Carol met a North Dakota boy, Joseph W. Hertz, who was stationed with the Civilian Conservation Corps 4728th Company at Camp Twanoh, in Belfair, WA. They were married February 14, 1938 and soon after were busy building their first home in Belfair. Their first child, Geraldine "Jerri" Jo Hertz was born in 1939 in Shelton. Her son Vernon "Butch" Hertz was born in 1945 at Bremerton. Shortly after Butch was born, they moved to Seattle and then in 1950 they moved north to Mount Vernon where she helped Joe with their Signal Oil distributorship. She has made her home in Mt. Vernon ever since.
Her husband Joe preceded her in death on August 10th, 1974.
In her early years, Carol was busy supporting the war effort while working on battleships with her husband at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard during WWII. After moving to Mount Vernon, she was the bookkeeper for her husbands businesses, Hertz Petroleum and later Tri-City Refrigeration and also worked for a time at Miller's Department Store. Carol is a longtime member of Eastern Star and was also involved with the Genealogy Society of Skagit County and also an accomplished China painter.
In 1987, Carol became reacquainted with her childhood sweetheart, Rex George and they were married April 11, 1987. Rex preceded her in death on September 15, 2000.
Carol has been a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She leaves behind her daughter and son-in-law, Jerri and Dr. Leon Willis of Bend Oregon and her son and daughter-in-law Butch and Jeanie Hertz of La Conner and one brother, Dr. Larry A. Mathews (Linda) of Ridgecrest, CA. She is also survived by grandchildren Kelly Romero (Lennie) and Kerry Weidenbach (Ward) of Mt. Vernon, Brianna Hertz of La Conner and Scott Perry (Ann) of Lake Tapps. Special in her heart were her 11 great-grandchildren and one on the way along with many nieces and nephews. Carol also leaves behind one sister-in-law, Rose Walth of Tacoma, WA.
Carol's sense of humor has been a delight to her family; especially these last few years as her health and vigor has dwindled. She has left a legacy of strength and devotion to her family, second to none.
A very special thanks goes to Isabel and Frank Hernandez of My Joyas Adult Family Home in Mt.Vernon and caregivers Thelma and Maria. Their loving care of Carol in her last few months has been a blessing to our family. We would also like to thank Dr. Erik Stark for his attentive care and friendship for many years.
