Orma Woodard Mathews, long time resident of St. George, Utah, passed away on Christmas Day, December 25, 2006, at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Paul W. and Dana Duncan Mathews. She was 92 years and 7 months old at the time of her passing following several months of declining health. She was born May 21, 1914 in Acequia, Idaho, the eldest child of David W. and Maud R. Woodard.

Much of Orma's youth and young adult life was spent in and about Enoch, Utah, and St. George, Utah. She graduated from Dixie High School. After her marriage to Ross W. Mathews, in the St. George Temple, she spent much of her time at the family ranch in Clover Valley, Nevada. Orma served for several years as the Post Mistress at Joseco, Nevada. Later, she along with her family, moved to the Beaver Dam Ranch near the Beaver Dam State Park in eastern Nevada. There the family operated a cattle business and raised hay. Winter months were spent at the family home in St. George, Utah where her children all attended and graduated from Dixie High School.

Orma was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She taught for many years in the 6th Ward Primary organization. She was an avid genealogist and was instrumental in searching out many ancestors in her and her husband's ancestral lines.

In her later years, Orma suffered the loss of her eyesight due to macular degeneration and was greatly limited by this condition, however she continued to do all she could to serve her husband and family. Often she would say that despite her limitations she just chose to be happy. She loved to spend time at the Beaver Dam Ranch and would accompany members of her family whenever they would taker her with them. She is greatly loved by all who have known her and she has lived a rich and rewarding life. Her faith in the Lord Jesus Christ has never wavered even up to the time of her passing.
She was preceded in death by her late husband, Ross W Mathews; her youngest son, Omar L. Mathews; two grandsons, Bret Mathews and Joshua Kyle Mathews; granddaughter, Pauli Kaye Mathews. Orma is survived by her oldest son, David R. (Sharon) Mathews of Las Vegas, Nevada; daughter, Valoy M. (Robert) Hansberry; two other sons, Paul W. (Dana) and Ramon L. Mathews all of St. George, Utah; daughter-in-law, Kay Jean; brother, Creston D. Woodard of Walla Walla, Washington; sister, Melva Rene W. Wallin of Salt Lake City, Utah. Her posterity is rich with 18 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren with 3 more anticipated to come this next spring.

Funeral services will be held Friday, December 29, 2006, at 2:00 p.m. at the Spilsbury Mortuary Chapel, 110 S. Bluff St., St. George. There will be a Visitation Friday, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. prior to services at the Mortuary. Interment will take place at the St. George City Cemetery.

In Lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the LDS Perpetual Education Fund.
