YORKTOWN - Frederick L. Mathews, 73, passed away Saturday evening, June 14, 2014 at his home.

He was born on August 11, 1940 in Muncie, the son of Joseph and Frances (Lehnert) Mathews. He graduated from Muncie Central High School in 1959 and served his country honorably in the US Navy from 1959-1963.

Frederick worked for the United States Post Office for thirty-three years, retiring as Postmaster in 1986. He was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church; the Knights of Columbus; Lion's Club; Delaware County Sheriff's Auxiliary for twenty years and was part of the original Delaware County Civil Defense; and the Madison County Stamp Club.

He enjoyed collecting stamps and coins.

Survivors include his wife of forty-nine years, Shirley J. Mathews of Muncie; two children, Tim Mathews (wife, Kelly) of Daleville and Stephanie Rodeman (husband, Brian) of Pendleton; five grandchildren, Heather, Brittany, Adam, Bradley and Shelbie; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers and two sisters.

Services will be 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel with Fr. Dennis Goth officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory Cemetery, north of Muncie, with full military rites by the Veterans of Delaware County.

Friends may call from at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 17, 2014.
