Jack "Matty" Matheson

Hall of Fame Sportswriter, Broadcaster. He was known for his longtime coverage of Canadian professional sports, chiefly the Blue Bombers. Matheson began his career in journalism in 1946 with the now-defunct Winnipeg Tribune; he advanced to sports editor in 1959, and remained at that capacity until the newspaper folded in 1980. During his lengthy career with CJOB Radio, he served as a broadcaster for Winnipeg Blue Bombers' games, and reported 39 Grey cup contests. In addition, Matheson covered such sports as curling and hockey; he contributed stories to the Winnipeg Sun. His body of work in football was acknowledged, when he was inducted into the Football Reporters of Canada section of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1986. He was enshrined into the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame in 1999. The Jack Matheson Award presented annually to aspiring students in sports communications by the Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association is named in his honor. (bio by: C.S.)
