David Mathes Jr. - JOHNSON CITY

David Lester Mathes Jr., 60, 1513 E. Chilhowie Ave., Johnson City, formerly of Erwin, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, January 18, 2011, at the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mountain Home, following a courageous battle with cancer.

David was a native and resident of Erwin for most of his life before moving to Johnson City in 2010.

He was a son of the late Lester and Mary Lee Church Mathes.

David was a retired truck driver.

He was a Vietnam era U.S. Air Force veteran.

David was a Baptist.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Sammy Mathes, in 2001, and Charles W. Mathes, January 10, 2011.

David is survived by two brothers, Jerry "Pat" Mathes and wife, Betty, Johnson City, and Randy Lee Mathes and wife, Gloria, Telford; one sister, Dolores Ann Lewis and husband, Troy, Erwin; several nieces and nephews, including special nephew, Jerry Mathes Jr.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the V.A. Medical Center Hospice Program.

The graveside funeral service will be held Friday, January 21, 2011, at 11:00 A.M. in Mountain Home National Cemetery, with Rev. Terry Jones and Rev. Tony Birchfield officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the Boone Dam V.F.W. Post #4933 and members of the Tennessee Army National Guard.

Those planning to attend are requested to meet at the cemetery by 10:50 A.M. Pallbearers will be Pat Mathes, Bobby Fulwiler, other family and friends.

Those who prefer to make memorial contributions may do so to the V.A. Medical Center Hospice Program, P.O. Box 4000 (135), Mountain Home, TN 37684.
