Evelyn L. Matheny, age 91, of Kearney died Saturday, April 27, 2013 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Funeral services will be Thursday, May 2, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Evangelical Free Church in Kearney with Pastor Brian Klein officiating. Burial will be prior to services at Kearney Cemetery. Horner Lieske McBride & Kuhl Funeral Services of Kearney is in charge of arrangements.
Evelyn was born on December 8, 1921 in Kearney, NE; the only child of Herman and Minnie (Olson) Frideen. While growing up north of Elm Creek she attended the Capitol Hill School and the Fairview Sunday School. She also went to many special evangelistic services in Holdrege with her parents. Evelyn graduated from Sumner High School in 1938 and then attended Kearney State Teachers College where she received a rural teaching certificate. She taught at rural schools in Dawson and Buffalo Counties for three years. Evelyn and her father moved to Kearney after the death of her mother in September of 1944. She worked as a bookkeeper for Beshore Western Manufacturing Company which made aircraft parts for planes during WWII. She married Frank H. "Sam" Matheny on August 18, 1948 in Minden, NE. Together they had two children; a son, Robert and a daughter, Anita. As a couple they sponsored junior and senior youth activities at First Baptist Church. Later they became members of the Kearney Evangelical Free Church where Evelyn was active in many church activities, including cradle roll call superintendent, over 20 years as the 2nd and 3rd grade Sunday school teacher and women's missionary activities. They also sponsored the junior high youth group. Throughout the years Evelyn and Sam enjoyed traveling and also boating at Cotton Mill Lake.
Surviving relatives include her son, Robert "Bob" and Jean Matheny of Rapid City, SD daughter, Anita and Roger Spencer of Funk, NE; Grandchildren and spouses, Ben and Mindy Matheny of Elkhorn, NE; Chris Matheny of Kearney, NE; Beth and Patrick Bukowski of Edwards, CO; Erin and Jesse Doyle of Ames, IA; 2 Great Grandchildren.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
