DOROTHY JEAN BEWS
Dorothy Bews, of Gananoque, passed away on January 24, 2010 at Carveth Nursing Home in her 95th year.
She was born in Gananoque, Ontario on April 29, 1915 and was raised and educated there; she also lived in the Picton area before moving to Gananoque, where she devoted her life to husband Bob and daughters Carol, Judy and Barb.
Dorothy was affiliated with the Grace United Church and a past-member of the Rebecka Lodge. Mom took great comfort in home visitations with Rev. Harry Seeley and his predecessors.
After moving to Brockville following ill-health, she continued to maintain a subscription to "her hometown paper -- The Gananoque Reporter", and looked forward to regular editions of the Gananoque Historical Society Newsletter. She was an avid reader, enjoyed watching game shows, completing crossword puzzles and playing cards (especially euchre) until diminishing eye sight precluded these activities. She enjoyed all types of music (from George Jones to George Gershwin), and loved to dance (spending wonderful evenings at the former Canoe Club, now home to the Thousand Islands Playhouse). Her adventuresome side presented itself when she eloped with Bob on his motorcycle following a 3 month courtship. She loved animals and the home always contained a variety of family pets, especially the beagle puppy she presented to Bob on the occasion of their 25th wedding anniversary. Dorothy also supported Bob's passion for flying and the pursuit of his pilot's license, and accompanied him on many flights throughout Ontario, Quebec and New York State. She was a wonderful cook who made Sunday and holiday dinners a special occasion, and pies and fudge were family favourites. Dorothy enjoyed the time spent with family and friends on the St. Lawrence River, at Psyche Island and at the family cottage on Loughboro Lake.
