Collins, Melba Maxine (Masters), age 94, died Thursday, January 24, 2013 in Wichita, KS. She was born January 17, 1919, in Crum Creek, OK, to James and Lottie (Kiser) Masters. James Masters died in France during World War I before Melba was born. Lottie was remarried to Dock Snowder and the family lived in Lincoln Arkansas. Melba married Fayette Lewis Collins on July 16, 1937 in Lincoln Arkansas. They soon moved to Abilene, KS which became their home. She worked for 30 years cooking lunches for children at the McKinley Grade School in Abilene. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Abilene and spent many hours volunteering at the Abilene Memorial Hospital and the Abilene Senior Center. Melba loved children and baby sat for many in the Abilene community. She was still babysitting when she fell in downtown Abilene at age 84 and broke her hip. She told the surgeon (who was to do the hip surgery) that she wasn't taking any medication; the surgeon didn't think this could be true so he asked Ron; Ron said "That's right!" She was a healthy woman. Melba was preceded in death by her parents, husband Fayette, brothers Alvin Masters, Othonel Snowder and Charles Snowder. She is survived by son Ronald (Dorothy) of Wichita, grandchildren Brian of Wichita and Cynthia of Hutchinson, great granddaughter Cheyenne of Wichita, sister Wilma Shannon of Lincoln, AR and brother Melvin Snowder of Disney, OK.
Funeral services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, Abilene, KS, on Tuesday, January 29th at 1:30 PM. Viewing will be at the Martin Becker Carlson Funeral Home on Monday, January 28th from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Memorials are established at the First Presbyterian Church of Abilene, KS and Good Shepherd Hospice, 439 N McLean Blvd, Ste 100, Wichita, KS 67203.
