DENVER - The Rev. Charles Oakley Masten, 79, of 5924 Lookout Drive, West Lafayette, formerly of Denver, died at 5:15 p.m. Monday in Dukes Memorial Hospital. Born March 31, 1914, in Kilbourn, Ill,, he was the son of Adam W. and Lanora Blunt Masten. On June 1, 1941, in Shelbyville, Mo., he was married to Gayella M. Corey, who survives. Rev. Masten entered the ministry in 1954, on his 40th birthday, and was ordained in 1961. He retired in 1981 as a minister with the American Baptist Convention. He had served churches in Pleasant Mills, Kendallville, Wolcottville, Rome City, Denver, Wolcott, and Goodland. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Lafayette, and a member of the independent Order of Odd Fellows in Vermont, 111. He attended Ipava High School, Ipava, Ill, and Northern Baptist College in Chicago. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II. Also surviving are two sons, Oakley Jr., Hoffman Estates, I11., and Robert G., Rt. 3, Peru; two sisters, Catherine Eberle, Macomb, Ill., and lona Smith, Herrington, Kan.; three brothers, Gaius, Herington, Kan., Lloyd, Quincy, Ill., and the Rev. Clyde, Hammond, Ill.; and three grandchildren. One sister preceded in death. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in First Baptist Church, Peru, with the Rev. Dr. Bob Hammond and the Rev. Dr. Bill Helm officiating. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in McClain Funeral Home, Denver, and one hour prior to the services on Thursday in the church.
