Vada Massey, 84, of Amarillo died Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Pleasant Valley Baptist Church with Roger Smith, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
Mrs. Massey was born Jan. 25, 1925, in Caney, Okla., to Sam and Minnie Dodds. She was one of 10 children. She married Stanley on Nov. 19, 1945
During World War II, Vada moved from Caney to Stockton, Ore., and worked in the shipyards checking welds on ships. Her grandchildren lovingly and secretly called her "Rosie the Riveter."
She was a member of the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church and began attending church when it was first a temporary building, at the time of Stanley's retirement in 1979; she had taught Sunday school there for 23 years.
They moved to Caney, where they had 125 peach trees and a huge garden. Fishing was one of her passions. She was a homemaker and a loving wife and mother.
Survivors include her husband, Stanley Massey; two sons, Sam Massey and wife Sherry and Dennis Massey and wife Viki; six grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
