Betty Jean Massey Montgomery, age 73 of Vernal, Utah, passed away peacefully at her home of a brain tumor on Sept. 4, 2012. She was born Sept. 29, 1938 in Vernal to Lewis LeRoy and Edna Christina Sundquist Massey.

Betty Jean resided in Vernal most of her life. She attended local schools and graduated from Uintah High School. Betty Jean married Tom Montgomery on June 7, 1956. They recently celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary.

Betty Jean and Tom lived in St. George, Utah for five years. They enjoyed bowling and playing card games while living there. Although they loved St. George, they missed Vernal and their family so they moved back home two years ago.

She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints. She held various positions in the Relief Society, Young Women, Primary and Sunday School. She served as an ordinance worker in the Vernal Temple for eight years. She loved sewing and made many of her children's clothes for school. Traveling to see her brothers and sisters in Texas, Nevada, California, Nevada and Alaska was a highlight in her life.

She was a wonderful host and always made visitors to her home feel welcome. She enjoyed picnics and holidays or any occasion that brought the family together. Christmas was her favorite time. She loved to decorate in the old fashioned traditional theme. Betty had a way about her that made anyone who knew her strive to be a better person.

Betty Jean was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She enjoyed being a homemaker and being around family and friends.

She is survived by her husband Tom; children Jolene (Dean) Baker, Brad (Michele) Montgomery, and Wade (Leslie) Montgomery; siblings Doris Izagiurra, Marie Reagan, Bud (Janice) Massey, Patsy (Max) Rasmussen, Morgan Massey, Janet (Larry) Adams; grandchildren Levi (Ashley) Baker, Travis (Marcie) Baker, Rachel Baker, Matthew (Kebbie) Montgomery, Maria (Eric) Long, Mark Montgomery, Marty Montgomery, Randall (Aspen) Montgomery, Samantha LeBeau, Mike (Cadee Rants, Raye Lynn Cruz, Nick (Morgan) Cruz; great-grandchildren Jake Aguilar, Brody Lebeau, Brylee Ray Cruz, and hopefully many more to come.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Charles Massey; a sister,Utahn Massey; and her grandson Morgan Baker.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012 at 11 a.m. at the Naples Ward LDS Chapel. Viewings were Friday evening from 6 - 8 at the Blackburn Vernal Mortuary and one hour prior to services at the church. Burial was in the Vernal Memorial Park under the care and direction of the Blackburn Vernal Mortuary.
