Of Rockville, MD and formerly of Raleigh, N.C., on Saturday, October 31, 2009. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 64 years, George Kemp Massengill, M.D. She was the devoted mother of son R. Kemp Massengill, MD and wife Esther of Leucadia, CA; and daughter Karen M. Mills and husband Tom of Silver Spring, MD. She was the loving grandmother of five grandchildren: Sarah Harris; Tara Massengill - Wan (Brad) Suzanne Mills, Anne Perry (Randy)and Andrew Mills. She was also survived by two treasured great-grandchildren, Carson and Lauren Harris.
Evelyn Margaret Laurence was born March 21, 1915, in Norwood MN. and moved at the age of six to Armstrong IL. She was valedictorian of her class at Armstrong HS and was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate in bacteriology of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She earned her master of Science degree in medical technology from Wayne State University, Detroit, MI.
Evelyn was a tireless volunteer and leader in many civic, cultural, and church activities. She was a life member of Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority, serving as Province VP and as NC state Chairman twice. She was an expert seamstress and needle stitcher. Many family members cherish keepsakes of her craft. She loved traveling, an she and her husband visited countries on six continents. She also enjoyed music of all kins, crossword puzzles, bridge and reading.
A memorial service will be held at 2pm on Sat, Jan 16 2010, at the National Lutheran Home Chapel 9701 Veirs Dr., Rockville MD 20850. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the National Lutheran Home or to the charity of one's choice.
