Major League Baseball Player. A native of Philadelphia, he was a back-up catcher for parts of 10 seasons in the majors. A graduate of Temple University, Marzano was originally drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 3rd round of the 1981 amateur draft, but decided not to sign. He was a member of the 1984 U.S. Olympic team which included future major leaguers Mark McGwire, Barry Larkin and Will Clark. Drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 1st round, 14th overall, of the 1984 amateur draft, he made his Major League debut on July 31, 1987, against the Kansas City Royals. He played 6 seasons with the Red Sox before his release during spring training of 1993. After spending the next season and a half in the minors, he resurfaced with the Texas Rangers for a two game stint during the 1995 season. Granted free agency after the season, he signed a contract with the Seattle Mariners on December 14, 1995. It was in Seattle that he played his final three seasons in the majors as the backup to starting catcher Dan Wilson. After his career, he worked in radio and television as a sports reporter in his home town of Philadelphia and most recently worked for Major League Baseball's website, where he co-hosted the "Leading Off" show on MLB.com weekday mornings. Over the course of his major league career, he appeared in 301 games, batting .241 with 11 homers and 71 RBI. He died after a fall downstairs at his home in Philadelphia, apparently after a heart attack.
