Mary Bustamante, was born the summer of 1925 in Mora, NM to Alex L. Branch Martínez and Antonia Martínez.
Mary married Pete J. Bustamante in 1950.
After she graduated from Mora High School, she attended Highlands University for one year, then worked as a Secretary for the Special Orders Division at the Commanding Officer Air Transport Command at Camp Luna. After the camp was de-activated she returned to Highlands where she earned Bachelor and Masters Degrees. While attending college, she also worked during her free periods as Secretary to the Head of the Business Education Department, Secretary Interfraternity Council, as well as being very active in several College Organizations. Mary is a former member of Pi Omega Pi, a National Professional Fraternity in Business and of Phi Sigma Iota, an Honorary Romance Language Fraternity, President of the PLK Sorority. Mary is listed in Leaders of American Secondary Education. Mary taught Business Education at the high schools at El Rito, Mora, Santa Rosa and at Robertson. While teaching at Robertson, she was honored as the New Mexico Business and Office Education Teacher of the Year by the New Mexico Office of Education Association. After 31 years in teaching, she retired in 1987.
Mary was a life-long member of the Catholic Church.
Mary is survived by her husband, Pete J. Bustamante of the family home, son, Donald Bustamante of Michigan, daughters, Bernice Wachtel of Las Cruces, NM and Arlene Wirtz of Corrales, NM, son, Peter E. Bustamante of Las Vegas, NM and daughter, Cynthia Barnes of Fairbanks, Alaska, brother, Horacio T. Martínez of Las Vegas, NM granddaughters, Amanda Wachtel, Melissa and Sarah Wirtz and Makayla Barnes.
A public viewing will be all day on Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at Rogers Chapel in Las Vegas, NM. A Rosary service will be held on Thursday, September 25, 2014 at 8:30 a.m. with Funeral Service to be conducted immediately after Rosary at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Las Vegas, NM with Father George V. Salazar as celebrant. Interment will be held at 2:15 p.m. at Santa Fé National Cemetery in Santa Fé, NM. Serving as Casket Pallbearers will be Herman Gallegos, Eddie Martínez, George Panegas, Ralph Bustos, Leroy Martínez and Leroy Fugenzi. Serving as Honorary Pallbearers will be all his former students.
