The son of Malvina Noel and Eugene Martineau, John was brought up in South Lawrence, MA. He entered the U.S. Merchant Marines and traveled to exotic ports in Europe and Africa. He met Rose Woodley while on leave in London. They married in 1929, moved back to MA, and had ten children.
John was a businessman and a farmer. He operated Martineau's Egg Farm and Martineau's Oil from his property in Methuen and owned several houses in Lawrence.
He could play a mean game of checkers.
