YAKIMA - Josephine Burckhard, 89, of Yakima, joined her family and friends in Heaven on Wednesday afternoon, November 14, 2007, surrounded by her loving family in her apartment at Hillcrest at Summitview Assisted Living Care.
Josephine was born July 20, 1918, to Stanus and Josephine (Buckmeier) Martin on the family farm eight miles southeast of Orrin, North Dakota. She was the twelfth child and last survivor of the Martin family. Josephine attended a country school in the Antelope Township. On October 18, 1937, she married Adam Burckhard of Berwick, North Dakota, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Orrin. They farmed eight miles southeast of Orrin from 1938 until September 1942, when they moved to Yakima. They managed a family orchard for several years. They then started and operated Adam's Used Furniture and Appliance on 24th Avenue in Yakima until they retired.
Josephine was a member of St. Paul Cathedral for 65 years. She was a member of the Y.L.I., and the Eagles and V.F.W. Auxiliary. Josephine loved going to church, family gatherings, baking, picnics, gardening, going out for Chinese dinners, and playing bingo and slot machines. She made many friends at Hillcrest at Summitview/Living Care Retirement Community.
Josephine is survived by two daughters, Millie (Joe) Lafferty and Irene Hauser, and three sons, Robert (Lori) Burckhard, Harold Burckhard and Timothy Burckhard, all of Yakima; thirteen grandchildren, twenty-three great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Theresa Martin of Grand Forks, North Dakota; numerous nieces and nephews, and many dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Angeline (1942), a grandson, Bradley (1976); six brothers and five sisters all of North Dakota; her husband Adam on August 26, 1997; two daughters-in-law and two sons-in-law.
The family would like to especially thank the staff at Living Care Retirement Community for their gentle loving care of Josephine. They would also like to express their appreciation to the staff at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital, Cornerstone Medical Clinic, and the Lower Valley Hospice Program.
Viewing will be from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and from 9 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. Monday, at Langevin-Mussetter Funeral Home.
A vigil service will be at 4 p.m. Sunday, November 18, 2007, at Langevin-Mussetter Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1 p.m. Monday, November 19, 2007, at St. Paul Cathedral. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
If desired, memorials may be made to the Lower Valley Hospice Program, in care of Langevin-Mussetter Funeral Home.
