LaNelle Marie Martin, 90, passed away Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009, at an area hospital.
Funeral: 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, in the chapel of Lucas Funeral Home, 1321 Precinct Line Road. Dr. Jeff Burnett, pastor of First Baptist Church of Hurst, will officiate. Interment: noon in Itasca City Cemetery. Visitation: The family will greet friends at 9 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
LaNelle Marie was born Feb. 16, 1918, in Childress to Oliver Verdo and Nell Terry Vernon.
LaNelle graduated from the University of Arizona in 1939 with a bachelor's degree in education. She taught elementary school in Wray, Ariz., until her marriage to James Tommy Martin on Dec. 27, 1941, in Itasca. After World War II ended, she and Tommy lived in Amarillo and reared their sons, Jim and John.
LaNelle formally studied the piano in college and enjoyed playing the piano all her life. She often played for her Sunday school class.
Prior to her marriage, LaNelle had been a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church. After marriage she became a member of First Baptist Church of Amarillo. Later she became a member of First Baptist of Hurst. She was a devoted member of PEO, a charity sorority, and served in both the Amarillo Chapter and the Hurst Chapter.
Her hobbies included equestrian riding, playing golf, gardening, especially growing roses, working in her yard and playing the piano.
She dearly loved her family and especially delighted in her grandchildren. She also dearly loved and cared for many, many friends throughout her life.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Tommy Martin.
Survivors: Sons, John Martin and his wife, Judy, of Dallas and Jim Martin and his wife, Virginia, of Durango, Colo.; grandchildren, Christy Martin, Kate Martin, Kelsey Martin Thomas and her husband, Colt, Hunter Martin and Blake Martin; sister-in-law, Georgia Martin of Itasca; cousin, Joe Tom Glover of Amarillo; nieces; nephews; and extended family.
