CUNNINGHAM, Lena
(Age 85) - Lena passed away October 13, 2005
in Spokane, Washington.
Lena was born at home June 5, 1920 in Viola, Idaho to August and Olga Martin. Lena was preceded in death by Virgil Cunningham and her parents. Lena is survived by her son Charles Cunningham and daughter Nadine Sharpe; grandson Craig Sharpe and wife Amanda and daughter
Haylee; granddaughters, Desiree', Rebecca, and
Katrina Rathbun; brother Harry Martin, his wife
Marian; sister-in-law Ruth Cunningham; and many nephews, great-nephews, nieces and great-nieces. Tragic childhood circumstances lead to Lena becoming a non-verbal teenager at the age of twelve, leading to a quiet, demure young adult woman, not speaking up for herself, which led to her being
institutionalized for sixteen years at the Orofino State Hospital in Idaho. Lena was essentially written off until her late thirties when she met Virgil, whom recognized her as a woman of worth and brought her back into the world of society. Once given a chance, Lena proved that she was a strong, capable woman, a pioneer woman making due with meager circumstances as she provided, loved and cared for her children as she traveled with Virgil throughout the western states. Lena lived with her daughter and grandchildren the last twenty-three years. Lena helped keep the household in order, initiating tasks. Lena loved to keep busy when she wasn't doing household tasks;
you could find her putting together a complicated puzzle to doing arts and crafts. Lena loved her pets, with them curling up in bed with her. Lena loved and cared for her children and grandchildren and they greatly missed her. Although Lena remained a woman of quiet demeanor, enduring rough times and crimes against her, Lena was of a beautiful and kind spirit.
