Bruno Martinez, died February 13, 1998, at Great Plains Regional Medical Hospital in North Platte, Nebraska at the young age of 100. Some still stay he was older, because in the old days in Mexico, the people did not keep birth records in some small towns.
He was born October 6, 1897, at Aguascalientes, Mexico. He was born to Hiladio and Cruz Martinez. At the age of 15 he wanted to join up with the famous, Pancho Villa. The story is told, that one morning his mother woke up to find Bruno gone. She found him at the train station along with all of his friends. She dragged him off the train by his shirt collar and made him go home with her. He was embarrassed of course, but his mother Cruz loved him more, and did what was right, getting her son home. Later, they heard that all of the young men had been killed by an ambush. The family migrated to the U.S. and became citizens. Bruno married Maria Hurtado in March 1921 in Chanute,Kansas and moved to North Platte in 1933. She preceded him in death in March 1961.He was employed by the Union Pacific Railraad, retiring in 1962. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, the Up Old Timers and was an avid gardener. He loved all his children and grandchildren and great-great-great grandchildren. He was a very kind and gentle person. He spoke of his wife Maria always and could sit and talk about his life for hours.
