Jean E. Baird, 85, of Fairmount passed away suddenly at 4:01 p.m. Monday, March 29, 2010, at her home.

She was born Jan. 17, 1925, in Danville to William Clarence John and Lela Dell Massey Martens. Jean married Everett Leo Greer; he passed away in 1959. She later married John S. Baird in 1960; he passed away in 1992.

Survivors include two daughters, Cheri Voorhees of Oakwood and Jill Hodge of St. Charles, Mo.; seven grandchildren, Shanna, Barry, Justin, Tom, Erick, Austen, Aubri; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Billy Martens and George Martens.

Jean had been an Illinois Bell telephone operator in the 1940s and a secretary for the director of nursing at Lakeview Hospital, and also for Jamaica schools. She had also been a licensed beauty operator.

Jean was active in the Order of the Eastern Star, first with the Fairmount Chapter, and later with Iris Chapter 307 of Danville, and had been a Past Worthy Matron. She was a member of the former Jamaica United Methodist Church, served for a time on the Fairmount Library Board, and enjoyed reading, sewing, and crocheting.
