Samuel Marshall was a businessman, served as postmaster of the village of Foxburg, and is noted in his probate records and on his gravestone as "Esquire".
He was a grandson of Col. Christopher Truby and Sybilla Bauman of Greensburg, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania; and of Andrew and Mary Eaton Marshall of Franklin County, Pennsylvania.
