A son of John Marshall (1803-1889) and Charlotte Kelker (1800-1854); named either after his father's brother Samuel Marshall AND his maternal grandmother's family; or after his mother's Uncle Samuel Thome (1786-1801)), the brother of his maternal grandmother, Rebecca Thome Kelker (1778-1824).

Samuel T. Marshall and Elizabeth A. Forquer were the parents of four children: William Frederick (Fred) Marshall, Charlotte (Lotta/Lottie) Elizabeth Marshall Mechling, Aaron Alonzo (Lon) Marshall, and Nancy J. Marshall.
